CBD & Sleep: Why CBD is the world’s favourite sleep aid

CBD aids sleepGetting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis is well known for being one of the most important aspects of maintaining a healthy body and sharp mind. But despite this, a recent study has shown that no country currently exceeds the recommended sleep average of 8 hours per night. Beyond that, a survey reported by the Daily Mirror has stated that around 30% of people in the UK are severely sleep deprived and 36% are classified as possibly having chronic insomnia.

There are many sleep formulations out there, ranging from synthetic sleeping pills (which have a habit of causing more harm than good in the long run) to herbal teas. But CBD is one of the few solutions which works with your body, not against it, to bring all functions back into balance just as they should be. What’s more, there’s a growing body of evidence to support its efficacy in getting you to sleep and helping you stay asleep too.

Here at KLORIS, we’re all about keeping your wellbeing in check. So, given the trouble so many are having with sleep, we wanted to share a little bit with you about why CBD could be the supplement you’ve been searching for. Here, we take a look at just a few of the ways CBD can support your body into getting a restful night’s sleep.

CBD promotes relaxation

According to a chemist-4-u sleep study, which surveyed 2,000 British adults on their sleeping habits, stress is the leading cause for those struggling to get to (and stay) asleep. Fortunately, CBD (and over 100 other cannabinoids found in our broad spectrum products) interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the human body in such a way that stress and anxiety levels can be quickly reduced.

If you’ve ever had elevated stress levels when taking a dose of CBD oil, you’ll have noticed the near-immediate calming effect. As the cannabinoids make their way into your blood stream and attach to endocannabinoid receptors, your own endocannabinoids are released within your body and allowed to flow freely, allowing a sense of bliss to settle in and anxiety to melt away. Deep sleep can then follow.

CBD reduces pain & discomfort

Niggling aches and pains that are bothersome during the day can become a real issue when you get into bed at night and stop you from getting the night’s rest you need. By taking CBD before you try to sleep (better yet, throughout the day too) you trigger CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system into reducing inflammation and therefore pain.

The cannabis plant has been used to treat pain as far back as 2900 B.C and for very good reason! Read more about this in our blog on CBD & Pain Relief.

CBD produces sleep-inducing effects

Thanks to more and more research into the impact cannabis has on the endocannabinoid system, there are now multiple studies which show that increased endocannabinoid signalling within the central nervous system promotes sleep-inducing effects. This, of course, occurs every time you take CBD.

The release of endocannbinoid anandamide is thought to decrease wakefulness and increase slow-wave sleep and REM sleep, while also increasing levels of adenosine, which plays a role in promoting sleep and suppressing arousal.

CBD helps you stay asleep

Getting to sleep is one thing, but staying asleep is another. Once you’re in the pattern of poor sleep, it can be very tricky to train your body back into healthy habits. But, CBD products can help.

Although cannabinoid CBD doesn’t get you high at all, it is thought to encourage a mild sedation effect during sleep, particularly when in higher doses. One 2018 study performed on 409 adults over the course of two years looked at insomnia and each individual’s level of symptom relief. The results indicated that while psychoactive THC was also found to be beneficial as part of the entourage effect, symptom relief for insomnia was most impressive with high levels of CBD and low levels of THC.
